Abstract

Kata kunci: Biofiltrasi, BOD, COD ABSTRACT The seaweed industry, especially from the seaweed washing process, produces a large amount of wastewater and can pollute the environment if it is directly disposed of without processing. The seaweed washing process uses chemicals that are harmful to the environment before the seaweed is further processed into various products made from seaweed. The concentrations of BOD and COD produced from this process are quite high, so it is necessary to make an effort to process them in accordance with the established quality standards. Research on the use of plant biofiltration systems to reduce BOD and COD concentrations from seaweed industrial waste has been carried out. The purpose of this study was to reduce the BOD and COD content as well as to determine the effectiveness and processing capacity of the plant biofiltration system. The results showed that the plant biofiltration system was able to reduce the concentration of BOD up to 28.6 ppm and had an effectiveness of 87.27% for 48 hours of processing. The COD concentration decreased to 70.5 ppm and had a treatment effectiveness of 83.93%. The processing capacity for BOD and COD was 6.81 ppm/m3 hour and 12.78 ppm/m3 hour, respectively.
